Blue Fish Companion XIII
"I was a Teenage Blue Fish"
(August 23, 2003)

Ok, so most everyone knows this is the blue fish that got shut down by the Sooner Theatre management due to smoking in their fine building.  It was messy, and everyone on both sides felt awful.  Defenestration didn't get to play.  450 people were sent home wanting.  But that's all in the past.  I have a few pictures that I might put online someday.  But it also seems appropriate to leave this page unfinished... just like the event.  Below, however, you can at least read the promo material about the show that didn't get done.

There's a time & a place for everything, right? There are also details for all those things, from what I hear. So, like, here's all of that for BFC XIII:

Blue Fish Companion XIII - "I was a Teenage Blue Fish"
Saturday, August  23rd @ The Sooner Theatre
101 E. Main Street in Downtown Norman, OK (map)
The Blue Fish Companion is an ALL AGES event

Schedule of Events:
Doors
- Open at 8:30pm
The Wallet Impact
- $5 before 10pm, $7 afterward ...so, please, come out early!
(I'm very sorry for the higher price, by a couple bucks, but the Sooner is WAY more expensive to rent!)
Films
- will start at about 9pm. We'll be showing about 45 minutes of locally produced film "shorts" to kick the evening off.  Everything has an Oklahoma tie.  I'll get some specifics online... as soon they roll in.
Bands - will start at 10pm... here's the full list:
Kicking off the live sounds:
Drives Like A Dream

Drives like a Dream are a new Norman band, with a sweet melodic appeal.  Very vocal and lyrical oriented.  With lyrics that include tributes to both Jesus, and Elvis. In the same song EVEN!  Please do come out early - for Drives Like a Dream.
Purple Cow Story

The PCS have been around the Norman scene longer than you could imagine.  Four years? Six years?  I'm not sure... but it's been a good while.  Every time I see them, they just get better and better. Alex. The guitarist. Met him YEARS ago, at Pinocchio's Restaurant (out of business - I miss that place) and we found a mutual interest in The Jesus Lizard. Seriously, what more could you want in a friend? So, now his band rocks. Come see PCS before Alex hits the sky (6 short hours after this gig) to spend a year studying in Russia.  If a cordial sendoff is not reason enough, come out because their songs are good, and the band rocks.
Donny Vomit

We all know/love Donny.  There's nothing local to compare him to... because... there's simply nothing local to compare this guy to.  He's a unique one of a kind!  Seen anyone eat glass lately?  Walk on glass?  Swallow a balloon?  Escape from a straight jacket?  Poke holes in their cheek?  Lay on a bed of nails and smash a concrete block on their chest?  Donny does that kind of stuff.
Forty Minutes of Hell - These guy plan to rock your rock.
Headlining:
The "Defenestration" Reunion

(with Tyson Meade and Todd Walker)
The reunion of a legendary Norman band - and their first show in fully 17 years!
mp3 for "Tripping Drag Queens" is linked below, along with a lengthy write-up on the band.
DJ Bronzai - spinning before, between, & after
Smoking & Drinking - One change with the Sooner over the Legion will be different rules about smoking and drinking... but I'm trying to work around it as best as possible. On smoking, we will be allowing exit and re-entry.  On drinking, I've contracted with Coaches to set up a cash bar in the balcony are for anyone over 21.  The Sooner Theatre will also be selling soft drinks, popcorn, candy, and stuff like that.  It's a cool historic building, and we do need to take care of it.  But I'm convinced we can still have a ton of fun in an ever so slightly less rowdy manner.

More about Fish XIII  and Defenestration:
I'm very excited about this particular blue fish companion.  Not really more than usual, because I'm always really excited. But at least as much as usual in a rather unusual manner - that's how I'd put it.  Not only is our local fish becoming a spunky little teenager on the 23rd, but we're also going to be traveling back in time with a bit of a history lesson of Norman underground rock.  Here's the story.
Back when I was in college (I'm kind of old - you probably won't remember this) there was a really great band in Norman called "Defenestration".  No, not the European metal band Defenestration with the girl lead singer.  Not that defenestration (lowercase, on purpose)... we're talking This Defenestration (uppercase, intentional).  The one with Todd Walker and Tyson Meade in it.  For a brief, but double happy moment, back in the 1980's... Defenestration were kings of the underground hill, if you can forgive the ludicrous analogy of an underground hill. In time, they were picked up and signed to Relativity Records.  They had two releases and a career that included sharing the stage with the likes of the Meat Puppets, The Replacements, and even U2.  To hear an mp3 of their song "Tripping Drag Queens" just click here. (3.2 MB file)
Eventually, however, times did change and Defenestration slipped into rock-n-roll history.  Todd went on to pursue solo projects, and Tyson formed the Chainsaw Kittens.  You can read a great article about Tyson from the "Pop Matters" magazine by clicking right here.  There's also good information in this article about the Defenestration years.
So what I'm getting to... Todd and Tyson are back together to undertake a Defenestration Reunion project, and their first show in fully 17 years will be as the headliner at Blue Fish Companion XIII.  Webster's defines the band's name as "An act of throwing someone or something out of a window.".  But for fish XIII we're bringing them back in through the window.  Other bands will play... freaks will perform... DJ's will spin...  films will be shown... much fun is sure to be had.  So try to make it out, huh?
